A common feature in many Chinese households is a barrel-shaped stool, that can be used either indoors or outdoors. Outdoor stools are typically made from ceramic materials and embellished with patterns, colors and motifs that serve not only a decorative function, but can impart lucky or auspicious meanings. As a result, decorators often dub these barrel shaped stools “lucky stools”. This stool is made from all solid teak wood and can be used both indoors and outdoors, either as a stool or a side table. The sides of the stool feature open dowel carvings in the shape of a quatrefoil. The quatrefoil shape is traditionally used to symbolize the persimmon in Chinese art, and the fruit is used in the East to represent “business” or “affairs”.
